Kids' Foods

type size: [A] [A] [A]

Sara's mom had a knack for finding healthy, natural treats for the kids. Here are a few of her mom's tried and true kid-friendly recipes, along with some Sara has developed along the way.

Dog's Breakfast
Dog's Breakfast is a dish that was inspired by Sara's Grandpa. It has healthy protein and whole grains for a hearty breakfast.

Ingredients:
Eggs
Toast

Instructions:
Soft boil the eggs for about 5 minutes in boiling water. Toast your bread and shred into bite-sized pieces in a bowl. Crack eggs and spoon over the toast. Season with salt and pepper.

Macaroni and Trees
Macaroni and Trees bring color and nutrients to an otherwise bland dish. Sara's mom used to also make this with fresh tomato slices.

Ingredients:
Prepared package of natural mac n' cheese.
Steamed organic broccoli stalks

Instructions:
Prepared boxed macaroni and cheese according to package instructions.

Steam organic broccoli stalks in a small amount of water in a saucepan. Cut “stumps” of broccoli stalks so that they can stand up in the pan of mac n' cheese without falling over.

Create a "forest" across your pan. Season with salt and pepper.

Tea n' Juice Mix

Tea n' Juice Mix was a favorite of Sara's and her siblings'. It was Sara's Mom's way of cutting down the sugar content of the juice without losing any flavor.

Ingredients:
Herbal tea (Mandarin Orange Spiced is one of Sara's favorites)
Apple juice Ginger root

Instructions:
Brew a pot of herbal tea. Be sure it is herbal so you're not adding caffeine to the mixture.

Let it sit out to cool to room temperature.

Fill a pitcher half-full with store-bought organic apple juice. Fill the pitcher the rest of the way with the cooled herbal tea.

For an added zing, grate some fresh ginger root into the pitcher. Serve at room temp or chilled.

Fresh Smoothies

Smoothies were a quick after-school snack for all of the kids at Sara's house. Unlike store-bought smoothies, hers was full of soy proteins, fresh fruits and antioxidants.

Ingredients:
Banana
Frozen strawberries
Frozen peaches
Flax seed oil (or extra omega 3's)
Protein powder (use less than a scoop for kids' smoothies)
Spirulina (blue green algae for antioxidants)
Soymilk or Organic Cow's Milk

Instructions:
Blend together all of the ingredients. Pour into a fun glass. Add a straw and enjoy.
