Meet
Sara Snow! Talk to anyone in the field of organic foods and you'll quickly learn that organic food enthusiasts, like Sara Snow, treat organic foods as a lifestyle. Everyday decisions, like certifications and seals of approval, affect the decision-making process about how to buy, cook, and store organic foods. If you read any Sara Snow bio or interview, she'll tell you it's about experiences, choices and family.
Snow comes by her "fresh" bent honestly. Raised in the countryside outside Ann Arbor, Mich., surrounded by farms and compost heaps, she enjoyed the benefits of one of the most fresh-oriented cities in the country. But perhaps more important than her geographic location was the natural- and healthy-living education she got from her family.
Sara's dad is a pioneer in the natural foods industry. As co-founder of Eden Foods, American Soy Products (two heavy hitters in the world of organics) and Blue Horizon Organic Seafood Co., Tim Redmond helped to bring healthy products to tables across the country ... and he was always dragging his daughter with him. Sara learned firsthand from her dad how important it is to have a healthy approach to living. It isn't just about your body, but about the Earth, the environment and the profound impact our daily choices have on future generations. Along with her father, Sara's mother was one of her greatest teachers. She stocked the family kitchen with healthful groceries (from her dad's natural deli in the early days), organic fruits and vegetables just picked from the garden, whole-grain breads fresh from the oven, and iced herbal tea with a touch of apple juice to create a yummy alternative to soda pop. Sara played in organic cotton T-shirts and washed her hair with natural jojoba shampoos. And when Sara got sick, her mom gave her echinacea or goldenseal in the powder form (yuck!) with a little bit of honey to help the medicine go down.
While other youngsters were chasing down their Sugar Smacks and Cocoa Puffs with extra sugar and cow's milk, Sara was sipping soy milk, munching on carob bars and dining on rice balls with nori ... that's seaweed. Let's just say it didn't always make her the most popular 8-year-old at school. But kids still came to play, because at Sara's house, healthy living didn't have to be icky or boring. It was fun, tasty and always full of surprises. Sara's siblings all knew that the right blend of soy milk, strawberries and spirulina (blue-green algae) can taste just like a milkshake — a green milkshake, that is.
The organic consumer market is growing all across America. Retail sales of organic products are expected to reach $20 billion by 2007, and nearly two-thirds of Americans say they have tried organic foods. It's not just a fad. Organic living is big business, and it is creeping its way into homes around the U.S. Sara Snow is living proof. Once an outcast among friends because of the foods she ate and products she bought, she lives a lifestyle now embraced by many health-minded young professionals. She swaps recipes, teaches anyone who will listen, listens to those who know more, and continues to surprise even herself at just how tasty, fun and easy "fresh" living can be.
Sara resides in Indianapolis, Ind. with her husband Ryan and their dog, Makana.
