For me, natural living is about everyday choices, it's about family, it's about feeling good and it's about future generations and the future of our earth.
I grew up in the countryside outside Ann Arbor, Mich. where my dad, Tim Redmond, was a pioneer in the natural foods industry. I played outside in organic cotton T-shirts and washed my hair with natural jojoba shampoos. When I got sick, my mom gave me Echinacea on a spoon or covered a patch of poison ivy with a compress of Goldenseal tea. And while other kids were chasing down their sugary cereals with cow's milk, I was slurping down soymilk, chomping on carob bars and dining on brown rice balls with nori (that's seaweed).
As I grew up, I coasted through grade school, high school and college, rarely sick. After college I began to work in television as a reporter and anchor for a local morning tv news program. But after three years of 3 am wake-up calls, I had no choice but to call it quits. Though I was still controlling my wellness through natural foods and healthful exercise, the dramatic shift in my lifestyle (mainly the lack of sleep and ongoing stress) made it nearly impossible for me to continue down that path.
So, I left and I committed to living a slower, more balanced life. I wanted to create a healthy home like the one I grew up in, not only for myself but for my husband, Ryan (even our dog, Makana) and for the kids we hope to someday have. This is why I created the concept for this tv series, to share with others what I have learned, that your lifestyle decisions can have a profound impact on your health. Wouldn't you rather make healthful choices?
