Sam's Thoughts on Hong Kong

• I was invited to be a judge for the “Best of the Best” – an annual Hong Kong restaurant competition.  But once that part was settled, it made sense to try to make a show out of it.

• We stayed on Hong Kong Island, in the center of it all, really.  However, we traveled over to Kowloon and the New Territories for some of what we did.

• I fell in love with won ton noodles.  I’ve had them many times before, but in Hong Kong they somehow had a whole new taste.

• I think I was surprised most by how amazingly fresh the food was – whether it was from restaurants, street vendors or markets.  In fact, even their version of what would most closely resemble our own fast food is still essentially made to order.

• The funny thing is, at a Western Chinese fast-food place many things seem to be deep-fried, but not in Hong Kong.  Instead they serve fish, vegetables and lean meats – all quickly cooked in a wok.  I could eat that way all the time, and the food is really inexpensive – wow.
