Peter F. Armstrong, MD, FRCSC, FACS, FAAP

Director of Medical Affairs, Shriners Hospitals for Children

Dr. Armstrong received his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario Medical School in 1972. He served as a Medical Officer for the First Regiment in the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery from 1973 to 1974 and as a surgical resident from 1974 to 1976 at the Canadian Forces Europe Medical Centre in Lahr, West Germany.

He was a research fellow at the Toronto General Hospital and Ontario Heart Foundation at McMaster University from 1976 through 1978. From 1979 through 1981 he was a Resident in Orthopaedic Surgery in the University of Toronto program. He did a clinical fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery with Dr. Robert Salter at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. In 1982 he was appointed to the staff of The Hospital for Sick Children and awarded a Post Doctoral Research Fellowship with Professor C.T. Brighton in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. In 1984 he returned to Toronto where he practiced at "Sick Kids" until 1991. He moved to Salt Lake City, Utah in September of 1991 to become Chief of Staff of Shriners Hospitals for Children-Intermountain. He was also appointed Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Utah.

In 2000 a search committee selected him to be the next Director of Medical Affairs (Chief Medical Officer) of the 22 Shriners Hospitals, which required a move to Shriners International Headquarters in Tampa, Florida.

Dr. Armstrong is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC), Fellow American College of Surgeons (FACS), and Fellow American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP). He is licensed to practice medicine in Ontario, Canada, Utah, Idaho and Colorado.

During Dr. Armstrong's medical career he was awarded numerous honors, awards, and scholarships. The Pearl Devenow Fox Award, Irving Heward Cameron Scholarship, Ontario Heart Foundation Research Fellowship, Visiting Professor Award from the University of Toronto Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, R.I. Harris Award for most outstanding orthopaedic resident, The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation Research Fellowship, to name a few.

Dr. Armstrong is a member of numerous professional societies and organizations: Canadian Orthopaedic Association; American Orthopaedic Association, American Burn Association, American College of Physician Executives, American College of Healthcare Executives, American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, Christian Medical-Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, to name a few. He serves on the Advisory Board for the Health Sector MBA Program at the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario.

He has served on the Editorial Boards for the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma and Techniques in Orthopaedics for Aspen Publishers, Inc. He has served on many committees as a member of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America since 1987. He is a Charter Member of the North American Association of the Study of the Applications of the Method of Ilizarov. He has been a member of the Board of Directors for the American Telemedicine Association, and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America. Dr. Armstrong successfully completed the Kellogg Management Institute program at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. He has also completed the Leadership for Physician Executives program at Harvard Medical School, Department of Continuing Education,

Dr. Armstrong has been an invited guest speaker at over 300 outside lectures, has published 50 scientific articles and book chapters, and over 30 scientific abstracts.

Dr. Armstrong and his wife, Mary Catherine (Cathie) (nee McFadden), have four children, Mark, Drew, Adam and Libby and one grandson, Hunter Peter.
