Shivaun, Associate Producer/ Dancer

After falling in love with Rumi's philosophy and poetry while completing her International Baccalaureate, Shivaun moved to Turkey at the age of 19 with only a hip-scarf and her trusty fiddle. Having previously only studies classical dance forms such as Ballet and Bharatanayam she was immediately attracted to belly dances defiance of patriarchal categorization: its mixing of the spiritual and the sexual. Studying under dancers such as Funda Pakis, Ahu Ozkaran, and Nesrin Topkapi her love of Turkish culture led her to release an album of Turkish folk songs with Sony/Columbia records.

Adalat, Dancer

While still only a school girl in Xinjiang (a Turkic region of North Western China), Chinese government officials noticed Adalat's precocious nature, joyful spirit, and natural talent, inviting her to study at the prestigious Xinjiang Art Institute. There, she spent more than a decade studying Uyghur dance, ballet, and various folk dances including classical Indian and flamenco. Upon graduation from this formidable school, she moved to Beijing to improve her technique. She continues to be a frequent guest on both local Beijing and Chinese national broadcasters.

Dominique, Dancer
Dominique first discovered her love of dance at the disco. Forever in search of the next dress up dance party, it would only be a matter of time before she traded in her polyester for sequins and beads. Upon finishing a visual arts degree with honors from the University of Victoria, she found she had plenty of time to pursue her love of dance and has traveled to the countries of its origins to experience their cultures and study their different styles of belly dance. For the past nine years she has studied belly dance with teachers such as Asmira and Nath Keo in Canada and Ahu Ozkaran in Turkey.

Gillian, Dancer
Gillian considers herself extremely lucky to have begun studying belly dance when she was only 15 years old, finding confidence and comfort in this ancient art form. Gillian began taking lessons on Vancouver Island from teachers such as Angelina Peterson and Faith Hunt and soon became well known in the belly dance community as both a teacher and a performer. While she has studied with many classical Egyptian dancers such as Yasmina Ramzy, Morroco, and Suhaila Salimpour, her incredible muscular isolations can be attributed to her training in the American tribal belly dance form with greats such as Rachel Brice, Samantha Hasthorpe, and Lava.
