At this phase, baby has developed the ability to crawl and eventually to pull himself to a standing position. Play that takes place at this age will evolve and become more complex. Stacking games become a favorite among many children at this age.

Child development expert Jerome L. Singer suggests investing in small moveable toys such as cars and trucks. While children will not necessarily see the items as miniatures of the real thing, Dr. Singer explains, "objects like that can have a long life with a child, so in the earliest year, they can just move them back and forth. In the next couple of years they can begin to make up imaginary games."

Dr. Singer also urges parents to continue a dialogue with their children. "Say something about the objects, give the object's names, use terms like 'peek a boo' and 'I'm going to hide this, see if you can find it.'" While some phrases may be complex for young children to comprehend, little by little, children will come to understand their meanings.
