  • Stop smoking and avoid secondhand smoke
  • Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in saturated fats and salt
  • Avoid being sedentary
  • Exercise
  • Consider taking vitamins C and E and beta carotene — all powerful antioxidants
  • Minimize stress
  • Talk to your doctor about other interventions to become heart healthy (help with weight loss or smoking cessation, medication to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and clearance to start an exercise program).
