American Massage Therapy Organization
Massage therapy can be a good means of relieving stress, in addition to easing a variety of neuro-muscular conditions. This site, which represents over 44,000 certified massage therapists, includes a professional directory of its membership, a stress self-test and a bibliography of literature on the benefits of massage therapy.
American Psychological Association Help Center
A consumer outreach service of the American Psychological Association, this site offers helpful articles under "Psychology at Work," "Mind/Body Connection" and "Family and Relationships" along with fact sheets on the role of psychology in stress management and other mental health conditions. A "Find a Psychologist" tool is also featured.
Arnot Ogden Medical Center
Located in Elmira, New York, the Arnot Ogden Medical Center publishes a large site dedicated to patient information and education. Their Stress section offers a range of articles on stress management, stress and health and stress and relationships as well as information on the dangers of "self-medicating" to get through stressful periods. Their "Stress Assessment" is especially recommended.
Biofeedback Certification Institute of America
A simple site with the bare basics for anyone interested in becoming certified in biofeedback, its best feature is a professional directory for locating a biofeedback professional near you. It also includes tips on what to ask your practitioner, an explanation of biofeedback and a description of what to expect from your biofeedback experience.
Don't Sweat the Small Stuff
Psychologist Richard Carlson, Ph.D., has become one of the most popular names in stress-reduction with his book, "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff … and it's all small stuff." His site offers much of the same lessons and advice found in his books as well as an "Ask Richard" feature, community areas and daily stress-reducing reminders.
Learning Meditation
Learning Meditation is an excellent starting point for people unfamiliar with meditation or who need help getting started. Begin with "Learning to Relax," then experience several soothing RealPlayer meditations in the "Meditation Room," and explore the respectable recommended reading list under "Suggested Reading."
Transcendental Meditation
Since its introduction in the United States in the mid-70's, studies have shown transcendental meditation to be an effective trigger of the relaxation response and an acceptable part of the treatment of high blood pressure, a condition often related to chronic stress. While this site is clunky in design, all the information you need is here to begin an exploration of this mind-body technique.
