Sleep Paralysis
small text
large text
Sleep paralysis presents no real risk, but anyone who's struggled through an episode or two of being wide awake and frozen knows it's not a pretty thing. When sleep paralysis occurs and the biological "switch" that immobilizes our muscles during REM sleep fails to turn on again as we wake, Antonio Zadra notes that the muscles of the eyes and tongue are not affected. The are untouched by REM phase paralysis, so if you blink and wiggle your tongue wildly, you might just break the petrified spell.
