The Heart: The Amazing Machine

Aorta: In this picture the big, red, pipe-like tube branching from the heart supplies fresh blood to the entire body.

Superior Vena Cava: Blue pipe-like vessel to the left of the aorta returns de-oxygenated blood from the head and neck to the right atrium.

Pulmonary Artery: The blue branching vessel to the right of the aorta carries de-oxygenated blood to the lungs.

Pulmonary Veins: The pink-purple vessels barely seen behind and on the right of the heart bring freshly oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.

Coronary Arteries: These small, branched red vessels directly on the heart muscle nourish the heart with oxygenated blood.

Coronary Veins: These small, branched blue vessels directly on the heart muscle carry "used," de-oxygenated blood into the heart chamber to be pumped to the lungs.
