Cockroach Allergens

Cockroaches are not only annoying but they can cause allergies too! Recent research has identified cockroaches as a major cause of allergy symptoms.

Cockroaches are:

  • Often present even when they are not visible since they like to come out in the dark.
  • Most commonly found in the kitchen and bathroom because they need food and water to survive.
  • Often present in public buildings such as schools and stores.
Killing the cockroaches does not completely solve the problem. Their droppings and body casings are what cause most people's symptoms.

You and your doctor can decide on the avoidance measures that are best for you. Some ways to limit your exposure to Cockroach Allergen are listed below.

Discuss these with your doctor.

  • Use insect sprays. (note: have someone else spray while you are outside the home) Air out your home after spraying. If you must spray, wear a mask and follow product instructions carefully.
  • Empty trash daily.
  • Avoid bringing cardboard boxes and brown paper grocery bags into your home. Cockroaches are attracted to the glue used to construct these items and they often hitch a ride to your home.
  • Store food in airtight containers, including pet food (e.g. airtight plastic food bags and containers).
  • Use roach traps.
  • Concentrate on the kitchen and bath when placing traps. Replace traps at least as frequently as directed on the product instructions.
  • If you live in an infested apartment building, try to get an exterminator to spray the entire building.
